Students 'Paying More For Their Groceries'

Bread and dairy have risen rapidly in price recently - potentially leaving students over £120 out of pocket.

Grocery shopping will cost students £127 more for the upcoming academic year than it did in the last, surprising new figures show today.

Abbey Banking conducted a poll among students, which asked them which food items they typically bought week in, week out. These results were then compared against the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which measures changes in the cost of goods.

The firm found that items particularly preferred by students, including bread and dairy products, had gone up in price markedly in recent months: bread has gone up by 13.7 percent over the past year, while dairy is now 19 percent more expensive.

Steve Shore, Abbey Banking director, commented: "Inflation is eating into student spending power at an incredible rate and for those heading off to university this year the increased cost of basic goods is likely to come as a nasty surprise."

He added: "Students need to ensure that they're budgeting carefully in all areas, and should ensure that they have a competitive student account offering a good interest free overdraft and other benefits."

As of last month, the CPI stood at 4.4 percent - the highest single monthly inflation figure for over ten years.
